This wooden head was manufactured to replace the true head of a death personn which was removed from the grave after the body started to decompose. The real head was stored in the house of men.

This replacement head was not used, so buried in the grave at the place of the skull of death.

 

The Iatmul unearthed the skulls of the dead and cleaned then. After with clay and wax, they reconstituted the face of the skull of the death, imitating the skin decorated with tatoo. They replace the eyes witf shells and painted the face. These heads were kept on shelves in the men's house.

 

It is sold with a small metal stand that allows it to be presented at its best angle placed on furniture.
