Agni

The Agni are mainly live in Côte d'Ivoire in the east and the south, but also in Ghana. They are about 1.3 million. They were the first people to get in touch with the European in the 17th century. The Agni have common roots with the Baule and Akan. Their art is influenced by the Baule of central Côte d'Ivoire and the peoples from the lagoon. The Agni live in forested areas and are farmers. The Agni were living in a monarchy. The king ruled the country assisted by a council. Society was divided into three castes: nobles, freemen and slaves. The sorcerer or witch doctor is called Komian. The witch doctors can give advice to the king, they are able to make predictions about the future by entering into a trance. The Komian are grouped into secret societies.
